Lightning F40 bullet-bike off to a flyer in rush-hour traffic

Is it a rocket? Is it a car? No, it's a push bike clad in aerodynamic fairing.

Malcolm Lamming, of Angmering, West Sussex, uses his unusual bike for his 64-mile round-trip into and out of work at Portsmouth each day. Mr Lamming, 42, an engineering manager, flies past becalmed traffic on the US-made Lightning F40, which he bought in Germany.

The machine cost £4,000 and has a top cruising speed of 35mph.

So fast, Lightning bicycles were banned by the USCF

Remember how great Tim did last year at the USCF Time Trials in Moriarty, NM? Well no more of that, thank you. The USCF has revised their rules to rule out recumbents:

"Recumbents may not be raced in USCF races unless there is a separate race for this category of bicycle, and then may be used only in that category."  (USCF Rules)

It appears that Tim beat so many upright bikes out there, even some ridden by famous riders, that the USCF had to respond to prevent him or anyone from doing it again! Of course, you can still go out and do it to your local club riders! Not that we encourage such blatant competition--much!

Fast as Lightning at RAAM 2004!

Team ALS Lightning was the first to cross the finish line in the famed Race Across America this year, setting several new records. A nearly 3000 mile non-stop race, the event is a proving ground for both man and machine and Lightning is proud to have built the bikes and sponsored the #1 team!

Who is Lightning Cycle Dynamics?

We build race-proven recumbent bicycles, and are the only recumbent company to set world records with a production bike (our P-38 model with optional F-40 fairing). Lightning recumbents have travelled from Los Angeles to New York in 5 days, won the Abbot, Paul Mitchell, and STP Challenge Prizes, and have set over 20 world records. In addition to being fast, the modern integrated Lightning design delivers a bicycle that is also much more comfortable, safer and faster than ordinary "upright" designs. For over 18 years, thousands of Lightning owners have enjoyed them for recreational riding, touring and commuting. For more information on what's special about Lightning, see our Racing Heritage, Media Coverage, and Company Information pages.
